STALLION MATING ANALYSIS:
TAMARKUZ

PREPARED BY: ALAN PORTER

Conqueror of Gun Runner in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1), Tamarkuz is by Champion Sprinter Speightstown, not only an outstanding sire, but also a sire of sires with 19 stakes siring sons, six of them grade one sires. He is out of a multiple grade one producing half- sister to a Travers Stakes (G1) winner and grade one sire.

Speightstown is out of a mare by a son of Storm Cat, but he and his sons have sired nearly 40 stakes winners out of Storm Cat line mares. For Tamarkuz, this has produced the graded stakes winner Red Flag out of a mare by Stormy Atlantic (sire of Get Stormy) and Two Rivers Over, winner of the $300,000 Zia Park Derby in 2023, out of a mare by Cowboy Cal, a son of Giant’s Causeway. From the Giant’s Causeway branch of Storm Cat there are also graded stakes winners out of mares by Giant’s Causeway and his son, Shamardal, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Fairbanks, with other sources including Not This Time, First Samurai, Giant Gizmo, Creative Cause, Brody’s Causeway, Carpe Diem, Fed Biz and Eskendereya. Giant’s Causeway is a brother to Freud and is bred on the same cross as After Market, both also broodmare sire of Speightstown line graded stakes winners.

From other branches of Storm Cat there is a Speightstown line grade one winner out of a mare by Menifee and a graded winner out of a mare by Harlan’s Holiday (sire of Into Mischief – also broodmare sire of a Speightstown line stakes winner – Shanghai Bobby and Majesticperfection), both by Harlan. There is a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Foresty and stakes winners out of mares by his sons, Shackleford, Discreet Cat and Bedford Falls, and also a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Johannesburg (sire of Scat Daddy, also broodmare sire of a Speightstown line stakes winner) and stakes winners out of mares by Henny Hughes and Wiseman’s Ferry, like Johannesburg sons of Hennessy. On the cross with Storm Cat line mares we can also note graded stakes winners out of mares by Tabasco Cat and Catienus and stakes winners out of mares by Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir and D’Wildcat), Bluegrass Cat, Sir Cat and Tale of Ekati (by Tale of The Cat, also sire of Lion Heart and Gio Ponti; grandsire of Kantharos, Girvin and Uncaptured).

Speightstown and sons have enjoyed remarkable success with mares from the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer, with 40 stakes winners including grade one winners out of mares by Belong to Me, Danehill, Lost Soldier, Orpen, Langfuhr (sire of Lawyer Ron – himself broodmare sire of a Speightstown line stakes winner – Mobil and Wando), and graded winners out of mares by Dayjur, Hard Spun, Honor Grades and a stakes winner out of a mare by Partner’s Hero, and mares by War Front and sons, such as The Factor and Declaration of War should also work.

The Deputy Minister branch of Northern Dancer has also done very well under Speightstown, with a grade one winner out of a mare by Deputy Minister himself, and a grade one winner out of a mare by Tejabo, and graded stakes winners out of mares byGhostzapper and his sire, Awesome Again, and Salt Lake, and stakes winners out of mares by Posse and Archers Bay and their sire Silver Deputy (also sire of Badge of Silver and Spring At Last), Touch Gold (sire of Medallist and Mass Media), French Deputy and War Deputy and Deputy Wildcat.

The cross of Speightstown and sons over Medaglia d’Oro mares has been extremely successful with four grade one winners, and could also be tried though mares by Violence, Bolt d’Oro, Fast Anna, Mshawish and Vancouver. Medaglia d’Oro is from the El Prado branch of the Sadler’s Wells line, which is also represented by Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller. Crossing back over other branches of Sadler’s Wells should also work well and Speightstown has a grade one winner out of a mare by Sadler’s Wells son, Perfect Soul, and a graded winner out of a mare by another Sadler’s Wells son, Galileo (sire in the U.S. of Cape Blanco and Magician).

The cross of Speightstown and sons with mares from the male line of Sadler’s Wells’ three- quarters brother, Nureyev, through Theatrical (sire of Shakespeare) has done very well, and Nureyev might be brought in through Unusual Heat and his son Acclamation, with other possibilities including Atticus, Fasliyev, Spinning World and Stravinsky.

The broodmare sire of Tamarkuz, Lemon Drop Kid, is out of a three-quarters sister to A.P. Indy, and the dam of Tamarkuz is half-sister to a Travers Stakes winning grandson of A.P. Indy. This would encourage try A.P. Indy line mares, particularly as Speightstown and sons have at least 25 stakes winners on that cross. Eight of these are out of mares by A.P. Indy himself. There are two graded stakes winners out of mares by Bernardini, the sire of the grade winning half-brother to the dam of the dam of Tamarkuz, and who could be brought in through To Honor and Serve and Stay Thirsty (giving inbreeding to the granddam of Tamarkuz).

There are also Speightstown line stakes winners out of mares descending through Malibu Moon, Flatter (sire of Flat Out), Congrats, Dance With Ravens, Jump Start and Pulpit. There are five stakes winners, one grade one, by Speightstown and sons out of mares by Pulpit son Tapit (sire of Constitution, Frosted, Cupid, Tonalist, Trappe Shot, Tapiture and Tapizar), which suggests other Pulpit sons as Sky Mesa, Flashback, Mr. Speaker, Corinthian and Stroll. It would also be possible to introduce A.P. Indy through Mineshaft (sire of Discreetly Mine and Dialed In), Stephen Got Even and Majestic Warrior.

Speightstown and sons have done very well with Caro line mares. From the Cozzene branch there is grade one winner Kimari out of a mare by Cozzene himself, and stakes winners out of mares by Mizzen Mast and Alphabet Soup. From the In Excess branch of Caro, Tamarkuz has stakes winner Lady Lottie out of a mare by Rocky Bar. We can also note out of amares from this line, grade one winner Switzerland out of a mare by Indian Charlie and stakes winners out of mares by Bring the Heat and a Uncle Mo (sire of Nyquist, Outadore and Mo Town). In Excess is also sire of Notional, and Indian Charlie is also sire of Souper Speedy, Adios Charlie, Bwana Charlie and Liaison.

There are six stakes winners on a Speightstown cross with mares from the male line of More Than Ready (sire of Verrazano, Ready’s Image and Daredevil). There are five stakes winners by Speightstown and sons out of mares from the Relaunch line, including through Honour and Glory (sire of Put it Back) and Tiznow (sire of Tiz Wonderful, Colonel John and Gemologist). There are four stakes winners on a cross of Speightstown with mares by Holy Bull and his son, Macho Uno and Flashy Bull, and four out of mares by Maria’s Mon (sire of Super Saver).
